Dental Hygiene

Dental hygiene refers to the process of keeping the teeth and general mouth region clean, so that oral health remains optimum. The most common form of maintaining good dental hygiene is to brush the teeth about twice a day with toothpaste to remove buildup of food and its resulting plaque. This prevents tooth decay and a number of other related health issues.

When cleaning teeth it is advised that the whole mouth region (teeth, gums and tongue) and thoroughly scrubbed with dentist approved toothpaste, followed by the rinsing with water and then mouth wash. To remove any excess bits of debris, flossing in between teeth is then recommended, followed by a further rinse. Performing this action properly, morning and night removes any food, plaque and tartar that lead to decay and gum disease, as well as keeping the mouth fresh and odor free. Usually once or twice a year your dentists may recommend a professional scale and polish to remove any build up of tartar that got missed during regular brushing.

A good prevention measure to block any damage to the teeth between brushing is the chewing of sugar free gum. This dislodges and removes a good percentage of plaque and food and keeps the mouth minty fresh. However it is not recommended that you chew for a prolonged period of time because it can cause stomach upsets, due to the swallowing or large amounts of saliva.

Some every day foods and actions can be detrimental to dental hygiene, including drinking a lot of tea and red wine (stains the teeth), smoking (discolors and helps buildup bacteria), eating sweets and drinking sugary and fizzy drinks (speeds up tooth decay) and even eating some overly acidic fruits. In moderation there isnít usually a problem, but if done in excess with a lack of mouth cleaning can cause long term damage.
